An oceanfront room overlooking La Jolla Cove. Shopping at Typo + Paper Tales. A trip up to Julian for pie + coffee. Breakfast on the roof of our hotel every morning. Rain + sunshine followed by more rain + sunshine. A walk around Balboa Park before heading home. And the real clincher: wedding venue hunting! We found two possible contenders, but are definitely in the market for other options. If you know of any great locations (anywhere in Southern California!), I would love to hear about them!

wedding thrifting.

The best part about being engaged (well, aside from the fiance, of course) is that for once in my life, I have a LEGITIMATE reason to shop! Every single day! For better or worse, I have become obsessed with tracking down + purchasing awesome pieces that can be used for decor or wedding-related craft projects. When I’m not trolling the interwebs for great deals + free shipping, you can bet I’m raiding Target, Michaels, or the Goodwill like the crazy person that I was born to be!

Here are a few of the thrifted items John + I scored last weekend:

wedding thrifting | ann-marie morris
glassware for food and flowers | coffee mug for attempting this project

wedding thrifting | ann-marie morris
wooden cassette tape holder for placecards | chalkboard globe for funky signage

Given that our budget is low, I’m looking for any and all ways to pull together our creative resources and DIY / thrift / repurpose as much as possible. (We’re both still paying off our fancy design educations, so we might as well get our money’s worth, right? Ha!) So far, so good. Now I just need to find a place to store all this wonderful – and inexpensive! – stuff before someone turns me in to Hoarders…

say yes to the forty dollar dress.

bhldn wedding dress | ann-marie morris

For as long as I’ve been dreaming of weddings, I always knew that I didn’t want to invest a ton of money in a dress I would only wear once in my life. Of course I wanted it to be something I would feel good in and would love seeing photos of for years to come, but never something I’d blow the whole budget on. (Photography + decor, on the other hand…all bets are off!)

With that said, when I found my dress last weekend at Anthropologie, I had no idea what kind of savings I was in for!

As the story goes, a local customer had ordered the dress online and then returned it to the store, so it was a rare opportunity for Anthro to actually have it in stock. It’s a beautiful layered + flowy dress in a light pink hue; not something I ever would have imagined choosing, but somehow so perfect. My future sister-in-law Jamie spotted it in the clearance section and convinced me to try it on. Once I did, all the salesgirls had to come see the BHLDN masterpiece for themselves…it turned into quite a party in the dressing room! And as if that wasn’t exciting enough, when I went to purchase it for the $80 clearance price listed on the tag, it rang up as FORTY DOLLARS. As in over $700 off the original price…! To say I was thrilled would be the understatement of the century.

To top it off, I scored the sequined gold flats and the cream jacket for a song, all in the same weekend. I don’t know what I did to deserve such a lucky fashion break (maybe it was all those days spent in my workout clothes / pajamas last summer?), but I am SO grateful!

Now if we could just find a venue at 95% off, I’ll be over the moon! (;

This past Saturday marked my first trip to a Renegade Craft Fair and it most definitely lived up to the hype! There were SO MANY AMAZING VENDORS. Seriously. I was blown away not just by the artists and their products, but by the packaging, the booth decor, the business cards…you know, the good stuff that makes buying handmade worth every extra penny.

Did any other locals get the chance to visit? Do tell!

when friends get married.

Like I mentioned in my birthday list, 2012 has been the year of destination weddings. And I am such a fan.

Two weeks ago, my good friend Jaymee had the most amazing wedding in Santa Barbara. And even though SB is only an hour north of where we live, John and I decided to turn the long weekend into a mini vacation. It definitely turned out to be one of the best ideas we’ve had in the many years we’ve been together. The first night we stayed near the harbor in Ventura and the next two nights were spent in picturesque Carpinteria. During the day, we traipsed all over Solvang, Santa Barbara, Montecito, and even Oxnard for a little Cafe Rio.

In case I haven’t mentioned it in the past fifteen minutes or so, I LOVE California. End of story.

blogs + coffee.

A few weekends ago, I met up with my good friend Janelle for coffee + blog talk. If there’s anything in this world that the two of use can discuss until pretty much the end of time (and then some), it’s bloglandia. Who we look up to, what kinds of posts we love, what styles we gravitate towards, and of course, how the H can we be those people? It really was the best and I can’t wait to do it again soon.

And speaking of blog loving, here are a few that have totally won me over recently:

- Small Fry. Am I a mom or do I plan on becoming a mom anytime soon? Good lord no. But I am in love with this blog run by a talented group of gals from Utah (where else?).

- The Fresh Exchange. The hand-lettered titles, the stunning photos, the Parisian lifestyle (!!!)…this blogger has the midas touch.

- Blog Brunch. A blog about blogging? YES. PLEASE.

- Obama’s Website. All politics aside, Obama’s team hit it out of the park when they hired SimpleScott to brand his campaign. This article profiling the head designer is especially fascinating.

What are your favorite new blogs? Do share!

photo love.

A new camera = zero self-restraint for me in the photography department. All I want to do these days is take photos of anything! And everything! All at the same time! Needless to say, I’m in love. In love with 18 megapixels. In love with the colors in that sunset. In love with California (despite it’s insistence upon summer weather forever). In love with going, seeing, doing, and having visual proof of it all.

bridal shower of the century.

When I say “bridal shower of the century,” I’m not exaggerating. I think Jaymee’s shower (thrown by an insanely talented team, including Miss Style Eater!) definitely qualifies for that title. When I arrived a few hours early to help set up, I was immediately blown away by all the details: the food, the flowers, the table settings, the colors…the kind of details that Pinterest dreams are made of.

Nothing less than the best for the beautiful bride-to-be!

invitations to die for.

Last weekend I was able to spend quality time with one of my best friends (who lives in Hawaii!) and help her assemble her amazing wedding invitations until the wee hours of the morning. Not only did Jaymee design every last detail herself, but she had the invitations letterpressed by PressHaus and the envelopes addressed by Molly Jacques! Needless to say, she brought out the big guns. Plus, she told me that I don’t have to send in my reply card, knowing full-well that it would pain me to relinquish such a gorgeous piece of paper! Ha! I love that girl.

If this is just a taste of what’s to come, then I can’t wait for the wedding! The grammin’ opportunities will be PRIME (;
